Part of the mission of the CMR is to serve economically depressed areas that have the highest rates of divorce, but the lowest amount of resources to get the help they need. These couples typically cannot afford a $500 weekend marriage retreat or $150 per hour for marital counseling.
Through our Neighbor Love Initiative the CMR partners with local churches in these areas to significantly subsidize a weekend marriage conference by providing the speaking team, all print materials, promotional materials, childcare, meals, and travel costs of the team. The church recruits the participants and their own volunteer staff to run the conference. The CMR also provides its Marriage Mentoring curriculum for the church to use as follow-up after the team leaves.
We recently launched the first of these conferences, which we call, “Fan the Flame Marriage Conference,” in Detroit, MI, on February 18, 2017. In partnership with Evangel Ministries, we hosted approximately 300 adults, 86 children and 36 volunteers for the day. The speaking team included the CMR’s Dr. Chris Grace (director and professor of psychology), Dr. Tim Muehlhoff (professor of communication), Dr. Veola Vasquez (Rosemead alumna), and Dr. Aundrea Paxton (Rosemead alumna). The speaking team also included Dr. Christopher Brooks, senior pastor of Evangel Ministries (Talbot alumnus), Dr. Sabrina Black, Evangel Ministries, and Dr. Crawford Loritts, senior pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Atlanta, GA (Talbot alumnus).
A big “THANK YOU” goes to all the Evangel volunteers that helped host the conference, especially Timashion and Taivia Jones.
